Monaghan

County Monaghan is an inland county and is one of the three counties in Ulster which remains in the Republic of Ireland. The main geographical features of the county consist of rolling hills and it is part of Ireland’s Drumlin Belt. These Drumlins formed ideal burial grounds, forts and cairns for the occupants of the county from before the Bronze age. After the Norman invasion of 1169, the O’Carrolls ruled, until the invasion of the English during the 17th century. After this invasion the town of Monaghan became a mainly Calvinist town.

Monaghan is surrounded by counties Armagh, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Cavan, Meath and Louth.
The name of Monaghan is derived from the name of an old ruling clan, the MacMahons.
Monaghan is the birthplace of Patrick Kavanagh, one of Ireland’s most famous poets.

County Monaghan is one of Ireland’s best keep secrets! It boasts unspoiled landscape, wildlife, beautiful scenery, and lots to do for both local and visitor alike.
